Planning Your Family Holiday in Phuket

Best Times to Visit Phuket for Families

Planning the perfect family holiday in Phuket involves considering the best times to visit. The island’s tropical climate means distinct high and low seasons, each with advantages and considerations. Phuket’s tropical climate means it is warm year-round, but understanding the weather patterns can help you plan a more enjoyable family holiday. Here’s what you need to know to make an informed decision.

High Season (Dry Season from November to April):

  • Pros: Phuket's high season, from November to April, is characterised by dry weather, sunny days, and calm seas. This period is perfect for beach activities, snorkelling, and exploring outdoor attractions. Popular tourist spots like Patong Beach, Kata Beach, and Phang Nga Bay are at their best during these months.
  • Cons: With the perfect weather comes an influx of tourists. This means higher prices for flights, accommodations, and activities. Attractions can be crowded, and you might need to book well in advance to secure the best deals and spots.
  • Temperatures: The average temperature ranges from 24°C to 32°C (75°F to 90°F), making it comfortable for outdoor activities.
  • Activities: This is the best time for beach activities, island hopping, and outdoor excursions. Families can enjoy water parks, boat trips, and exploring local markets without worrying about rain.

Low Season (Monsoon Season from May to October):

    • Pros: The low season, from May to October, offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. Prices for flights and accommodations are significantly lower, making it a great time for budget-conscious families. The lush green landscape during this time is ideal for nature lovers.
    • Cons: The low season coincides with the monsoon period, bringing heavy rainfall and rough seas. While plenty of activities remain to enjoy, such as visiting Phuket Town and indoor attractions, beach days might be limited. However, there are often breaks in the rain, allowing for some sunny periods.
    • Temperatures: Similar to the dry season, temperatures range from 24°C to 31°C (75°F to 88°F), but with higher humidity.
    • Rainfall: Expect frequent rain showers, sometimes heavy but usually short-lived. This season is perfect for indoor activities like cooking classes, visiting museums, and enjoying resort amenities.
    • Safety: During the monsoon season, the sea can be rough, so swimming at certain beaches may be restricted. Always heed local safety warnings and flags on the beaches.

      Tips for Families:

      • Flexible Plans: If travelling during the low season, plan for flexibility in your itinerary to accommodate potential rainy days. Resorts and hotels often have excellent indoor facilities to keep the kids entertained. Most tour operators offer a 24-hour cancellation policy and will cancel tours if the weather isn't safe for the planned activity or tour.
      • Health and Safety: Regardless of the season, stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and be cautious of the sun, especially for young children. Always check the local weather forecast and sea conditions before planning beach or water activities.

We travelled to Phuket at the end of May and only experienced one day of light rain. We loved that the attractions weren't overcrowded and not booked out early.

There is obviously no guarantee, but travelling at the beginning or the end of the wet season might be a great option to beat the crowds and have a more relaxing experience.

Understanding the pros and cons of Phuket’s high and low seasons and considering the weather can help you choose the best time for your family holiday. Whether you prefer the bustling high season or the tranquil low season, Phuket offers unforgettable experiences for all.

        The Right Phuket Holiday Package

Choosing the right Phuket holiday packages is crucial when planning your family holiday in Phuket. Phuket offers a variety of packages tailored to different preferences and budgets. These packages often include stays in top hotels and family resorts that provide all the amenities you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Hotels like the Marriott Phuket Town are renowned for their spacious rooms, excellent properties, and kid-friendly facilities. On the other hand, family resorts often come with additional perks such as kids’ clubs, pools, and daily activities designed to keep children entertained while parents relax. These packages can also include excursions to popular attractions, making it easier to plan your itinerary.

The benefits of venturing out for local food and restaurants outside of resorts

While resort dining options can be convenient and high-quality, visiting local food and restaurants can significantly enhance your Phuket experience. Phuket is known for its delicious cuisine, and trying local dishes is a great way to immerse yourself in the island's culture. The culinary adventures are endless, from fresh seafood at beachside stalls to traditional Thai dishes at local eateries.

Exploring local restaurants also allows you to experience the authentic flavours of Phuket, often at a fraction of the cost of resort dining. Places like the Phuket Weekend Market and Limelight Avenue Phuket offer various food options that will satisfy every family member. Dining out can also be an adventure, offering opportunities to discover quaint areas and interact with friendly locals.

Tips for Finding the Best Phuket Holiday Deals

Finding the best holiday deals can make your family holiday in Phuket more enjoyable. Here are some tips to help you secure the best value:

        1. Book in Advance: Planning and booking your holiday well in advance can often result in significant savings. Many hotels and resorts offer early bird discounts that can make a big difference.
        2. Look for Fully Refundable Options: Opting for fully refundable bookings provides peace of mind if your plans change. Many holiday packages offer this flexibility without any extra cost.
        3. Compare Prices: Use comparison websites to check for the best prices on hotels, flights, and holiday packages. Sometimes, booking components separately can be cheaper than a package deal.
        4. Check for Promotions: Look for promotions and special offers from travel agencies, airlines, and resorts. Sign up for newsletters or follow the social media pages of popular hotels and travel sites to stay updated on the latest deals.
        5. Travel During Off-Peak Times: Plan your trip during off-peak seasons. Not only will you find better deals, but you’ll also enjoy a less crowded and more relaxed experience.
        6. Use Loyalty Points: If you’re a member of a frequent flyer program or hotel loyalty scheme, use your points to offset the cost of your holiday. Programs like Qantas Frequent Flyer can offer significant savings on flights and accommodations.

Phuket holiday packages that offer great value, including flights, hotels, activities, and additional amenities, are also available.

By carefully selecting the right holiday package and taking advantage of these tips, you can ensure a memorable and budget-friendly family holiday in Phuket.

          Travelling to Phuket

Direct Flights to Phuket: What You Need to Know

Choosing the right airline for your journey to Phuket is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable trip. Australia offers several options for direct and connecting flights to Phuket, ensuring you can find a convenient travel experience from various major cities.

          Direct Flights from Sydney

          • Qantas: Qantas offers direct flights from Sydney to Phuket, providing a seamless travel experience with top-notch service. Known for its reliability and comfort, Qantas is an excellent choice for families.
          • Jetstar: Jetstar also provides direct flights from Sydney to Phuket, offering a budget-friendly option without compromising quality. This airline is popular for its affordable fares and family-friendly services.
          Direct Flights from Melbourne
          • Jetstar: Jetstar operates direct flights from Melbourne to Phuket, offering an affordable and convenient travel option.

            Flights from Brisbane

            • Currently, there are no airlines that offer direct flights from Brisbane to Phuket. Most flights require at least one stopover. Airlines such as Qantas and Thai Airways offer flights with layovers in cities like Bangkok and Sydney. Other carriers like Jetstar, China Southern, and Singapore Airlines also provide connecting flights between Brisbane and Phuket.

              Direct Flights from Perth

              • Jetstar: As a new route since early 2024, Jetstar operates several direct flights  from Perth to Phuket per week, offering a great alternative for good-value-for-money travel option.

Booking Components Separately vs. Package Bookings

When planning your family holiday to Phuket, deciding whether to book components separately or opt for a package deal is important. Both approaches have their advantages:

                • Separate Bookings: Booking flights, accommodations, and activities separately can often provide more flexibility and potential cost savings. This approach allows you to tailor each aspect of your holiday to your specific preferences and needs. For instance, you might find a great flight deal with one airline and a fantastic hotel offer from another source.
                • Package Bookings: Opting for a holiday package simplifies planning by bundling flights, accommodations, and sometimes even activities together. Packages can offer convenience and peace of mind, including transfers, meals, and guided tours. Package deals can sometimes be more cost-effective, especially if booked during promotional periods.

Navigating Phuket’s Airport and Transport Options

Upon arriving at Phuket International Airport, you'll find various transport options to reach your accommodation and start your holiday smoothly:

                  • Airport Transfers: Many hotels and resorts offer airport transfer services, which can be pre-arranged for a hassle-free start to your holiday. This is particularly convenient for families with children and luggage.
                  • Taxis: Taxis are readily available at the airport, but to avoid scams, ensure you use the official taxi service.
                  • Ride-sharing: Uber-like services like Bolt or Grab are popular and can be booked via a mobile app. Pro tip: This was our personal preference when travelling around Phuket. It's cheap, you don't have to bargain, you are not being ripped off, and a car or van is never more than 5 minutes away.
                  • Car Rentals: Renting a car can be a great option for those looking to explore Phuket at their own pace. Several car rental companies operate at the airport, offering a range of vehicles to suit your needs. Important: Most car rentals require an international driver's license. So make sure you organise that well in advance.
                  • Public Transport: While less common for tourists, public buses and minibuses are available and can be a cost-effective travel method. However, they may not be as convenient, especially with luggage and children.

Understanding and planning the best airline and transport options for your trip from Australia to Phuket ensures a smooth and comfortable start to your family holiday. Whether you prioritise direct flights, budget-friendly options, or top-notch service, there are travel solutions to meet your needs and make your journey to Phuket pleasant.

For our trip, we opted for a direct flight from Melbourne to Phuket via Jetstar and organised a hotel pick-up from the airport, which departs from Exit 2. During our stay, we always used the Bolt app to get from A to B. You need internet access via your phone for this, but I'd highly recommend organising roaming with your mobile phone provider to find your way around and have easy access to transport.
